Changing
Shape With liposuction
Liposuction, sometimes known as Liposuction is indeed a way of sculpting
the body to change its shape.
Liposuction was invented by the Italian cosmetic surgeon, Dr Giorgio
Fischer and further developed by American dermatologist. Dr Jeffrey
Klein.
It is not a substitute for losing weight, rather a means of getting
rid of localised fat that doesn't respond to exercise or diet.
Most common areas treated are abdomen, buttocks. hips, thighs, knees,
calves and ankles as well as chin, neck and jowls.
Liposuction removes unwanted fat by using vacuum suction. The fatty
deposits are injected with quantities of a solution of local anesthetic
and saline. The fat is sucked out through a fine hollow tube called
a cannula.
The Best Candidates for Liposuction
If you are not unduly overweight but want to change your body shape,
you are a good candidate. While age is no barrier to having liposuction,
for best results it is important that your skin has good tone, in
other words, it is elastic and firm. Loose or hanging skin will
not be removed with liposuction. Also, it is not a remedy for cellulite.
During your consultation, the doctor will ask about your medial
history and explain what Liposuction can and cannot achieve in your
particular circumstances.
Risks
All surgery carries risks. Although serious complications with liposuction
are rare, they do occur and you need to know about them. In a few
cases around the world infection, severe fluid retention or fluid
loss has resulted in serious illness or even death.
What to Ask Your Doctor
Ask how many times he or she has performed liposuction and how frequently
they are performing it at the present time. Remember that while
a doctor may be highly experienced in one or two procedures, for
instance facelifts and breast implants, and reasonably experienced
at others - such as eyelid surgery or laser resurfacing - it is
unlikely that he or she will be very experienced in all procedures.
So find the right doctor for the job. Ask to see plenty of your
doctor's 'before and after' photographs of previous patients.
Importantly ask your doctor how the situation will be managed if
your procedure does not meet reasonable expectations. All doctors
practicing cosmetic surgery will have a small number of complications.
These are procedures that for one reason or another do not go according
to plan. Ensure that if this happens, a revision procedure will
be carried out at no additional cost to yourself or at the very
least at only the cost of the theatre and anesthetist. The
Procedure
There is no need to undergo a general anesthetic for liposuction.
It is usually performed under sedation with local anesthetic. There
is no need for a hospital stay and you can go home afterwards. However,
if you choose to go home, it is important that you have someone
there to be with you for at least the first 24 hours.
Afterwards
After your procedure you will be wearing an elastic compression
garment this is to compress the tunnels made by the cannula in the
fat layers. You must keep this on at all times for about five days.
After this you will wear the garment according to your doctor's
advice. Do not expect to feel great immediately afterwards. Depending
on the area treated, most people are back to work between three
and seven days. Healing is a gradual process and you will find that
as the swelling subsides; your new shape will emerge. This may take
up to three months. Liposuction is a highly effective method of
recontouring your body and giving you the shape you want. Naturally,
it is important to watch your diet and take every step to maintain
your current weight However, the results of liposuction are permanent
and you will find that if you do gain weight you will tend to retain
your new shape - without the former bulges.
