Implant Surgery - things you should know...
In any cosmetic surgery a comprehensive, informative and understandable
consultation with the doctor performing the surgery is crucial. With breast
implants it is even more important because you have numerous choices.
It is the duty of your surgeon to explain these options to you. The choices
include not only the size of the implants but also to the shape, the filling
substance, the incision site and the type of anaesthetic to name a few.
Your surgeon may offer only a limited combination of these options, but
he should still explain to you the pros and cons of those that he does
offer so that you can make a truly informed decision about your surgery.
Remember, the biggest factor influencing what you will look like after breast implants is... what you look like beforehand. An experienced breast implant surgeon will be able to advise you on your likely results and show you photographs of his own patients whose before shots look similar to you. Make sure your doctor does this.
Since, in Australia, cosmetic surgery is not yet recognised as a specialty in it’s own right, it can be difficult to tell if a doctor is an expert in the procedure. The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery does certify doctors in breast implant surgery. You can check out the high standard of training and experience needed to obtain this certification at www.accs.org.au.
Do not assume that just because the doctor is a plastic or cosmetic surgeon that they are trained and experienced in cosmetic breast implant surgery. They may never have performed the procedure before! You should satisfy yourself that the doctor is an expert by asking how many cosmetic breast implant operations the doctor has done in total, and how many in the last twelve months. Ask to see photographs of the doctors own results and make sure you are being provided with the information to make your own informed decision, not simply sold a procedure.
If you are thinking about having breast implants, take your time. There is no rush. Make sure you are having the surgery to please yourself and not to please someone else. Implant surgery is unlikely to change your life or save a failing relationship, it will just change the shape and size of your breasts, and may as a result, give you a boost in self-confidence. If that is what you are looking for it may be the right solution for you.
